Spot UV Design Tips
Spot UV adds a glossy, standout finish to your prints with an Ultra Violet coating. At Lunar Print, we love how it elevates designs—here’s how to set yours up for success.
Focus on Bold Areas
Spot UV thrives on impact:
- Highlight larger elements—logos, patterns, or solid blocks work best. Thin lines or small text (under 0.5mm) can get lost due to registration tolerances (±0.5mm), so keep it chunky.
- Pair it with a matt finish for contrast—think glossy logo on a smooth background.
- Test placement—tilt your design in light to see what pops.
Set Up Your Artwork
We need precision for a flawless finish:
- Supply a separate Spot UV layer in your PDF—solid black shapes (100% Black, no CMYK mix) showing exactly where the gloss goes. Vector format keeps it sharp.
- Match it to your main artwork—same page size (e.g., 91 x 61mm for business cards with bleed) and crop marks aligned.
- For a single-sided job, send a 2-page PDF: page 1 is your design, page 2 is Spot UV. Double-sided with Spot UV on both? Make it 4 pages (front, back, front UV, back UV).
Think Tactile
Spot UV isn’t just visual—it’s touchable:
- Use it on key details—your logo or name—to draw fingers as well as eyes.
- Layer it over dark colors (black-on-black is a classic) for a subtle, high-gloss effect that catches light.
- Keep it simple—overdoing it can muddy the impact.
File Check
Before you send:
- Open your PDF—zoom in. Black shapes misaligned or fuzzy? Adjust them.
- Match our specs—300dpi, CMYK, 3mm bleed—and you’re set.
- Need a hand? Our templates are pre-set for Spot UV—grab one and go.
